MOD POST: PLAN OF ACTION
![]() We're back, Asgardians! And we're both sorry and not sorry for the sheer quantity of information in this post, ahaha... ha. Before we kick off, though, one bit of feedback we got this week made us realize that by now, the waters have been thoroughly muddied re: what Asgard is actually meant to be about. Is it exploration? Is it war? Is it cross-canon event shenanigans? Is it basically a Nordic-themed city simulator? So I wanted to offer you guys the blurb we put on our EMP ad, since that seems to sum it up pretty well. Asgard Genesis is a panfandom jamjar RP based loosely off of Norse mythology and inspired by (but not chronologically connected to) its original incarnation, Asgard Eventide. The tale of Asgard Genesis is, ultimately, one of impending war... If the city survives long enough to see it. The gods are currently very, very weak, and despite what they say (and genuinely believe, most days), they're unable to protect the Wanderers from many of the things that threaten the Asgard of today. Some, they have yet to even learn of, let alone understand. This arc of the metaplot is largely focused on a slowly-strengthening Asgard .vs. the world around them. Yggdrasil's magic is wild and unpredictable, sometimes beyond the mortal ability to fathom, and yet the only way for Asgard (and the gods who fuel it) to grow and strengthen is to venture out into the realms ensconced by that dangerous magic and to face what threats lie beyond. There is also an emphasis on building/advancing the city itself via what amounts to day jobs alongside or independent from the local gods, which will unlock perks for both the city and the player-characters ("Wanderers"). So that, essentially, is the Asgard we're building for y'all. Now - on to the results of your feedback! ABOUT THE GODS.We summarized the gist of our plan going forward in the State of the Game post last week. Since then, we've solidified our plans for executing that plan, which we'll summarize + clarify here. Ideally, these changes will be enough to make the god presence in Asgard both more tangible and more balanced, which are our two main goals re: the gods as NPCs. Who will play the gods? From this point onward, gods will only be played by the mods or designated NPC helpers who have availability in their schedule for the time commitment involved in being an active god presence. Because the amount of mental bandwidth it takes to play a god is not nearly as intense as it has been since the start of the game, an NPC helper would be responsible for 2-3 gods rather than one. We've opted to go this route because centralizing who is or isn't responsible for the gods feels like a key to making sure that the gods are present and available somewhat evenly. We considered taking the route where we simply played all unplayed gods, but the remaining gods would be played by a variety of individuals with a variety of schedules and we could just as easily end up in a slightly less dire flavor of the same mess we're in right now. How do we interact with the gods? One of the key facets of the long-term sustainability of this plan is to expect a lot less direct threading from the individual gods. Instead, we'll be adopting more of a 'summarized tag' format for the majority of the interactions between gods and players, in which Wanderers can directly interact with the god but will receive a summarized response rather than a full-blown tag. It's the difference between "He explains, regretfully, that X and Y aren't exactly possible," and actually writing out that explanation in the god's individual voice. Don't worry - even in summarized form, we plan to maintain unique god motivations, personalities, and mannerisms in order to keep one god from running generically into the next. Consider it more of a switch from close third-person to a more distant narrative viewpoint rather than a shift from IC responses to OOC ones. On top of that, each event will have 1-3 relevant gods that will be available for more traditional threading, of the sort you've come to expect from the god interactions in Asgard up 'til now. When will the gods be present? The gods will be present at a few different junctures!
What will the gods be doing? As will become much more clear in the upcoming pantheonic address on the network this week, the gods have semi-collectively come to terms with quite a few errors in how they've approached the Wanderers in Asgard so far. They now see that they've been treating the Wanderers as glorified pets rather than as something much closer to equals, and they plan to remedy this in a host of different ways.
( ! ) What if I want to play some NPCs? The role of NPC Helper may not be the most time-intensive role, but it's certainly the role that requires the most availability. An NPC Helper will be given 2-3 gods (ideally of their choosing) to babysit. They'll be responsible for all summarized interactions between those gods and Wanderers, and also for outright threading as each of those gods when they're featured in an event. Because god availability and presence is our top priority in this, we want a NPC Helper who is available to get back to things multiple times per week on a regular basis. Our NPC Helpers won't be in this alone, however! The mods will help you with any lore information, god history, etc. that you might need. In return, you'll be asked to advise on what you feel like your gods will be up to during a given month or a specific event, and to help craft god-specific curses and events of your own. If this interests you, send a PM to the mod journal! Same drill as before: Who you play, what role you're interested in helping with (in this case, the NPC Helper role), and how much time you have to devote to that role. We're looking forward to hearing from you. :) ABOUT EVENTS + METAPLOT.Since this was the brunt of the poll material, your feedback told us quite a bit about how we should proceed with our events and our metaplot going forward. In response, we've organized the key topics as best we can to address here. ADJUSTMENTS TO EVENT PACING. At current, we have an average of one event per month (with an occasional secondary event as an opt-out) as per the feedback Faith received back in June. As per the feedback we received, those who expressed issues with the pacing stated that overall the pacing is too slow, but the pacing of each individual event is too fast. From now on, you can expect either one large event and one mini-event (such as an extensive god curse) per month or (much less frequently) one large event with multiple unfolding steps. We will also be unrolling each of the larger events a bit differently than they've been unrolled in the past. For multi-step events and events in which the outcome is determined by the actions of the characters, expect the events to be split into multiple OOC infoposts + multiple logs. The event starting infopost + log are likely be forward-dated to maximize the time available in which to plot and thread without compromising the IC timeframe in which things take place, especially if that plotting/threading determines the outcome of the event as a whole. Ideally, by spacing things out into easily-digestible pieces over a wider timeframe, the pacing within our events will be much less stressful for y'all overall Another key concern we want to address is the frequency of large-scale events (in contrast with smaller filler-esque events). It was brought to the forefront of our attention that the last true 'event' prior to this month's DMC expedition was the White Walker battle in October. Not only does that put our pacing at one genuine event per three months, but both of the events that end-capped that time frame were based in canons. While this was in large part due to the holidays and other more unforeseen circumstances, it's safe to expect that this not happen again. Instead, we plan to fall roughly into a two-month cycle, with the first month's main event happening within Asgard and the second month's main event happening outside of Asgard in some way. The events within Asgard will continue to be full-scale events rather than filler (we save filler for the monthly mini-event), though they may not be as expansive as the events outside of Asgard just by virtue of the latter being an event that needs journeyed to + likely including an opt-out alternative back in the city. CHARACTER IMPACT ON EVENTS. We also heard quite a few concerns surrounding the concept of characters' IC impact on the outcome of events, or on Asgard as a whole. Many of you selected poll options suggesting that it feels like there's no actual tangible reward/consequence from the character-influenced outcome of events, and that we'd benefit from a clearer explanation of the rewards/consequences that were actually achieved by the characters. An adjacent issue we received feedback on is that the events with player-influenced outcomes feel a bit railroaded, whether or not they actually are. This stems from the fact that a given event's outcome has so far been decided before the event log (one single log, for the entire event) has even gone up, locking players into the tentative plotting they discussed before they've even had the chance to organically thread any of it. We think that both of these problems will be remedied in part by what we mentioned above in 'pacing': The combination of breaking these events into multiple logs/infoposts and forward-dating the initial log and info-post to maximize the amount of time that players have to thread and plot in the interim. We'll also be leaving most events open to more than one different possible conclusion to help folks keep from feeling railroaded. (This will have the additional benefit of simplifying the lengthy event blurbs quite a bit.) On top of that, we plan to find a way to clearly signal the impact that players/characters have. This may involve some troubleshooting, as we have a couple of different options to test out to see if they succeed, but all of the options involve distinct labeling of the point at which characters have chosen their own adventure + what came as a result. Finally, we plan to experiment some with the concept of measuring characters' impact. So far, the impact of characters has largely been measured by some version 'if this many people participate, we succeed. If not, we fail.' In the future, we'd like to toy with things like 'if these three varied conditions are triggered, the event fails' or 'if this mystery is solved ICly, the event succeeds'. We recognize that these are quite a bit more specific than the way it has been done in the past, but don't worry: We want y'all to succeed, and will be giving you and your characters all of the tools you'll need to avoid truly negative consequences the majority of the time. INDIVIDUAL INVOLVEMENT, REWARDS, AND CONSEQUENCES. Tying into the above, we see that quite a few of you crave more personal IC impact within events, and within Asgard as a whole. We'll address the former now, the latter later. From events, you can now expect more individualized rewards/consequences. Maybe the trio who struck the killing blow on a big bad each inherit one of the magical weapons it managed to swallow. Maybe a character who bullheadedly tried to fight a magical menace alone is cursed in a way that doesn't fade the next day like the more benevolent god curses she's used to, and suddenly finds herself with a new sidequest: Find out how to get rid of her curse. We'll also be dishing out both boons and banes throughout god interaction (including summarized/handwaved interactions), in the form of both physical items and magical buffs/debuffs. These won't be insanely common, but will definitely be more of a presence than they are right now. We'll also be providing more volunteer roles available in plots which require volunteer roles to be filled. In the past, it seems that events have had very limited volunteer role availability - for example, the White Walker event opened RNG sign-ups to kill the Night King, and out of the dozens who were interested in that potential opportunity, only one person got the role. There was arguably one more volunteer role in Lalli's discovery of the wights in the first place, but that's really just a semantic difference. We plan to make certain that if an event has volunteer roles available, it has more than one or two to choose from. (Note that lesser player plots and such may still just have the one volunteer role, as they're typically more limited in scope.) FACILITATING METAPLOT COHERENCY. Based on feedback, we see that a number of you feel like events and the metaplot ties between them feel a bit disjointed. This seems to stem from a few different logistical sources:
We plan to remedy this collectively in a few different ways. Firstly, we plan to ensure that main events are plotted multiple months in advance and with Asgard's current story arc in mind. We're going to be more mindful of an overarching narrative - of telling a story, not just giving you things to fling your characters at. We also plan to utilize the pacing adjustments to include more build-up and post-event action, in which the events are tied into the metaplot at large and the ramifications of the events are addressed ICly. Our opt-outs will tie into the primary event in some shape or form, when an opt-out is needed. Canon events will be handled quite a bit differently, as detailed in its own section below. It's also safe to assume that more of Asgard's events and happenings will come as a result of IC progress or discovery, which will actually be addressed down under the 'Daily Life' header. Finally, a Plot So Far page will be created to dish out the Cliff's Notes on what all has happened so far and why. (A note: This will need some input from Faith, who is rather busy with School and Life, so we can't offer a precise timeline on when it'll be unrolled!) CANON-BASED EVENTS. Almost everyone who contacted us with feedback beyond the poll itself addressed concerns with the canon-based events - concerns that we honestly already shared. Asgard is a game in which things from other worlds can definitely pose a threat, but the game isn't about otherworldly events threatening a magical city. From now on, expect large-scale canon-based events to come no more frequently than once per 5-6 months. When we do host a canon-based event, our main priorities will be to a) make sure that it's easily-digested and easy to participate in, and b) make sure that it still 'feels like Asgard'. Current canon events seem to be about 80/20 for canon material/Asgard material, and we're aiming for much more of a 50/50 split, even if we have to take some respectful liberties with the canon material to make that happen. That brings up the question, "How can we fairly choose which canons get to be featured?" That was one of the common concerns among the feedback: Canons with large casts seem to be the ones whose canons are chosen, which tips the scales against those with smaller casts (or no cast at all). This has largely been due to the fact that the larger canons are the ones who brought events to the Player Plot page, but that doesn't change the fact that the scales are tipped. As a result, we plan to create a couple of new pages: The first one is a general dump for canon-based event ideas. On this post, folks who'd like to see their canon-based events featured would drop a comment with any possible ideas they may have - no need to go into detail, a couple of sentences about the concept are plenty. Replies will be screened, and every time a canon-event month is looming on the horizon, we'll remind folks that the page exists and to toss their thoughts in if they're interested in being considered. From there, whichever ideas feel like they fit best with the current metaplot/state of Asgard will be tossed into an RNG, at which point we'll prompt the individual(s) from the chosen canon for more info and ideas. The second page is going to be a much smaller-scale Canon-Based Encounters dump. Here, you can drop any enemies, magical items, etc. from your characters' worlds that you'd like to see come into play. This gives us fodder for things like player-plot outcomes/discoveries, plus additional Problems to sprinkle onto events if need be. We'll be utilizing these suggestions much more frequently than the full-scale event suggestions, so if you'd like to see your canon pop up without bothering with an actual event, this is your avenue. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE CONTENT OF EVENTS. So we've talked about much of the structure of our events, but not yet the content. Based on the feedback, we hear that you'd most enjoy:
This is definitely all pretty doable, as one of the things we've been discussing is the fact that we'd like to include more exploratory events that aren't based in combat. In general, you'll typically be able to expect the mini-events each month to be more lighthearted, while the larger events are more on the serious side - though this will switch up on occasion. In both events, we plan to be especially mindful to find opportunity (aside from convoluted puzzles) to include the less combat-oriented characters in important facets of events. Aside from exploration, expect some diplomacy missions as Asgard continues to interact with an increasing number of outside groups and forces. We'll also be introducing a 'quest' mechanic, and the results of those quests may very well create problems that Asgard as a whole needs to solve in the next month's event. ABOUT UPDATES TO THE MAGIC SYSTEM.To give credit where credit is due, Faith came up with some exciting ideas that would add potential expansion to the system of magic already put in place. Though we’re now in charge, we definitely want to keep these ideas and execute them in the near future once some basic systems and changes are ironed out in their updated/tweaked forms. TIER ONE BRANCHES. Writing out spells as power app mods, we would often discuss amongst ourselves what changes would be made to buff Level One spells as a player worked their way up the magical tiers. Some spells have very obvious tweaks that should be made to make them more powerful, or only one or two variables to boost. Once we reached a Level Three application, however, we realized that choosing which variable to increase would vastly alter the landscape of the spell as a whole. What if we'd lean toward extending the reach of a spell, but the player would rather have the spell's potency buffed? How do we fairly choose which final form the spell should take? This became even more obvious a problem as we disagreed, highlighting that this is a very individual decision. Because of this, those who hit Level Three will now be offered 2-3 options for what shape their final Level One buff might take, and are able to choose their favorite of the offered options. This offers an additional layer of personalization - two characters whose Level One is Healing Spirit might end up with vastly different Healing Spirits at Level Three. It’s important to note, though, that this only applies to those who hit Level Three. There will also be changes to the Level Three application, including requiring more comments and thread length minimums. Which brings us to... NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR LEVEL TWO & THREE APPLICANTS. Level Two: Applicants will now be required to only link threads with a minimum of 5 comments from their character. Level Three: Applicants will now be required to provide 75 comments across seven threads with a minimum of 7 comments from their character per thread. Also pay close attention to the type of development we want showcased in the threads, including involvement with the setting and some kind of major personal growth. The Level Three requirements are being boosted quite a bit because we discovered they’re very lenient and pretty easy to hit without a lot of the meat and potatoes we’re looking for when it comes to ingratiating a character into the setting. As the last form of consistent magic your character will have, the requirements should reflect that kind of growth within the game. We also came across short threads being used for apps that don’t aptly showcase the development offered in the written section. Remember, your links should be a kind of proof of your written requirement section. “Here’s my threads, let me explain to you why they’re so meaningful.” Keep this in mind when filling out your Level Two and Three applications. This is now available on each God's power application post! If you're ready to submit your Third Tier application, you're free to do so now. :) MAGIC PAST LEVEL THREE. Asgard is a game that is based upon the potential for endless possibilities. The Gods can do so many things, and everyone exists on a plane where magic is essentially endless. Of course player characters can’t have unlimited magic, if only for the purpose of keeping things reasonable and avoiding everyone being OP. That doesn’t mean, however, that characters will always be limited to the current magic available to them. Faith pitched the idea that plentiful activity and involvement should be rewarded with the gift of new magic. You’ll receive more concrete details when the system is close to being implemented around the one-year anniversary of the game in June, but the process will involve pre-written spells (so no waiting on mods for anything other than approval) and the ability to gain more magic than is possible currently. ABOUT DAILY LIFE IN ASGARD.Thus far, we understand that it feels a little listless to have characters existing within Asgard, mostly without a real sense of purpose. For more proactive characters, it’s been easier to get them involved with something on their own -- but this doesn’t apply to everyone, and there should be open opportunity for anyone to involve themselves easily in the setting in some way. In large part, this was because the Wanderers have been treated like glorified pets. They've been fawned over and protected, but ultimately haven't been given much IC opportunity to make a difference and to fill their daily lives with meaning. In a public address this week, the gods will address this mistake and provide an IC kickoff for... GOD-RELATED JOBS. The Gods have decided to invest trust in the Wanderers, who have thus far proven themselves capable beyond the gods' initial estimations - and one of the biggest displays of that trust is to allow the Wanderers to sincerely and legitimately help them in building and protecting Asgard rather than waving off concerns and trying to shoulder the weight of it all themselves. In practice, this manifests as a job system within Asgard! The final structure of this system hasn’t been solidified, but the aforementioned public address will list off a number of the available options + you can expect a 'jobs' page to go up sometime in early February. (We're sorry it's not ready right away - we're mostly just trying to get everything that currently exists in workable condition in preparation for the upcoming app round!) These jobs may occasionally be a big part of a plot, depending on the type of event during that month - for example, Honir’s scouting squad could be very involved in an event related to exploration outside of Asgard, or Heimdall's city guard might encounter a threat attempting to infiltrate the city. You can also look forward to a poll or discussion post after this has been implemented for a couple of months to see how you feel about this facet of the game. QUEST MECHANIC. For those characters who don’t want to make a long-term commitment to a god, you can still be involved with rewards and connection through future quests that the gods put forth for Wanderers to complete. The idea is that a certain God wants something accomplished, and they ask the Wanderers to complete the task at hand for a prize or boon. These quests can vary in tone and importance - a God like Odin will likely have a more purposeful quest than a God like Sigyn, at least at times. They’ll be totally opt-in and a variety will be available to choose from. The rewards for these quests will vary depending on the God making the request and the difficulty of the task to accomplish, but they have the potential to be useful items, temporary buffs, one-time-use spells, and a host of other good stuff. One quest might reward victors with a boon from home, while another could be a magical item that can come in handy down the road. Or maybe the reward will be something more comical, provided by a trickster God - regardless, the nature of the reward will be listed beforehand. These will also be listed on the monthly bulletin, separate from the month's event(s) and not so intensive that you won’t be able to participate in anything else during the month. Look forward to quests taking anywhere from one to three days to complete. This may change depending on the quest ideas present for that month, but rest assured we’re looking for more casual, day-to-day ways to get characters out and about in the setting, not overwhelm you with week-long chores to keep track of. It's safe to assume these will become available starting in the March bulletin rather than February's, just to be realistic about what we're able to accomplish in the next six days. CUFF UPDATE. Lastly, one of the more confusing things about Asgard thus far has been a lack of understanding about what information is available and how much word of mouth has taken place to ensure said information is easily dispersed. One such area is the layout of the setting itself - we have a circular idea of what Godhauses are next to each other, but this hasn’t been something discussed ICly in a way that means everyone can immediately know for themselves. Thus, we’re handwaving a request for a updated Asgard map that will be available through all character’s cuffs. It will be a bit more detailed than the one you see on the info pages, obviously, but will act as a map of the city and shows where your character is currently. The haus sections will be shown and colour coded still, so navigating from Tyr to Skadi, for instance, will be much easier for character’s to accomplish, as well as much easier for everyone to understand OOCly. ABOUT THE GAME + HOW IT'S MODDED.As with any mod changeover, there are going to be some big differences in how we run things vs. how they were previously ran. Before continuing, we’d like to thank you for your patience and acceptance of us as we try to both make this transition as smooth as possible, while simultaneously assessing what needs to be adjusted and tweaking it accordingly. We definitely loved the game as it was - that’s why we’re here and have stuck around from the beginning, after all! And we can’t repeat enough that we love Faith and thank her for all of her creativity and hard work put in thus far. Still, we’ve discussed what needs to be changed about things after all the feedback you’ve given us + what we’ve considered together, and the following are some areas of change that you’ll be seeing either immediately or in the near future: SOME RULE CHANGES. The rules that will be changed will be bolded so as not to be missed. First, Asgard is a small game and has been for some odd months now. While we may see a rise in the player base in the future, for now we’re a tight-knit bunch. Because of this, we’re getting rid of the game cap to potentially be revisited in the future if it becomes an issue. It’s a cap that’s based on player size, and right now we don’t see much purpose in setting this limit when it’s both unnecessary at the moment ,and a potential turnoff for those who are cap shy. We’ll also be upping the limit of characters one person can play from 2 to 3. We've seen a number of folks over the last six months end up waffling over who to app as their second character because they only have one slot left, and is that character worth the last slot a player has? So we've taken a bit of the pressure off - if you’re dedicated to the game and want to play more characters here, go ahead! We’d also like to announce that playing NPCs will no longer contribute to your character limit. Because the NPC system is switching to one that isn’t so thread intensive, and much more conversational, it doesn’t feel right to include that as part of someone’s character roster. However, it’s very important that you understand your time management and capability of taking on this mod load. For instance, if you want to play three characters in game and possibly be on the NPC team, consider how available you’ll be to commit to all of that responsibility. We've also decided to loosen up on cast restrictions and 'duplicate' rules a bit. The biggest change is that MCU no longer encompasses the entirety of Marvel's movie/TV compendium - the Avengers and adjacent movies are now 'MCU', while shows like Daredevil, Agents of SHIELD, and Runaways are all applicable in their own right. Marvel comics also no longer count toward the MCU cast cap. As for duplicates, we're now willing to accept (for example) a movie and comics version of a character (or the same character from two different movie franchises), provided their narratives are distinctly different. For example, we'd accept Tom Holland Peter Parker + Andrew Garfield Peter Parker + comics Peter Parker, since their stories and even personalities are pretty different aside from the key similarities. There may be more rule changes that we implement as we get a little deeper into modding and feel out the areas that could stand to be loosened up, but the above changes are it for now. They'll be added to our FAQ and such as we take care of some info page housekeeping. Speaking of which! INFO PAGE OVERHAULING. The above changes aren’t yet visible because we’re in the middle of rewriting the FAQ, or at least parts of it. We understand the new rules pertaining to apps and caps are definitely important info for new applicants to know, not just the old guard, so we’ll be getting this done ASAP! This isn’t the only page we’re changing, though, and you’ll be kept up to date with any other changes we feel are necessary to make as we go through and update/modify other pages. Two big adjustments will be to the Housing posts and the creation of a Plot So Far compendium. For Housing, we understand it might be cumbersome to go through nine individual pages to look through setting information, as well as figuring out who lives where. There’s also the issue of many characters creating outside housing that they’re currently using, while simultaneously being listed on Godhaus pages as residence. This information will all be consolidated into one page that can be skimmed through easily, with listings that also include non-standard housing for perusal. The Plot So Far page (as mentioned in the 'events' section) will detail a month by month listing of what all has happened in Asgard, highlighting important discoveries and the events that took place there and how they tie into the metaplot. On a more general note, we’ll also be updating the overall coding and layouts for a more streamlined look. This is lower on the to-do list, but look forward to a brand new game #aesthetic in the upcoming months. MOD TRANSPARENCY & CLARITY. We touched on this in the first SotG post, but we definitely don’t want players waiting around without any idea of when to expect things. With the holidays and mod change over happening the past months, it was inevitable that some things were late, and for that we thank everyone for their patience and understanding. However, it is also true that these weren’t the only reasons for some long wait times, and that has been rectified thus far. The upkeep of this standard is very important to us, not just in the case of long wait times for power applications and plot responses. It’s inevitable that life gets in the way at times, but the overall standard we want to set is complete transparency and timeliness. This applies to events, quests, power apps, etc. In the event that a deadline can’t be met for whatever reason, we want to keep you guys up to date, as well as offer a new date so everyone stays informed. Also, feel free to ask questions and pick our brains about things. Feedback and suggestions are very important to keeping up an atmosphere of inclusivity, of give and take. Make suggestions, suggest your own plots - we love to hear “it would be great if [this] happened,” and “I’m down to have my character do [this crazy thing.]” If you want your characters to get up to something, fling that spaghetti at the wall and we’ll see how we can accomodate you. So all in all, that's where things currently stand. We will, of course, continue to consider feedback that we get from our playerbase in the future, but for now, these will be the changes we'll carry with us moving forward. MORE SCHEDULING, BUT LESS EXACT. A few upcoming things have been mentioned in the many sections above, so in addition to the concrete listed dates from the State of the Game post, here are a few more dates or general timelines.
That's it for today, Asgardians! Feel free to ask any questions or let us know what you think in the comments (or via PM or the Mod Contact page, if you'd prefer it be screened/private). ![]() |
