MOD POST: SEPTEMBER EVENT DESCRIPTION

september event description.

Howdy, howdy friends! Faith here with our event for September. We've also got a couple player plot things rolling out this month and a potential NPC pop-up event later on, but for now, we've got our first animal event to introduce new life into the world in true Asgardian fashion.

Before all that, though, some quick reminders:
  • August AC results are here! Please remember to respond to this post if you missed out on AC to stay in the game. September AC is now open here and will close on September 30 at 11:59PM EST.
  • Our next app round will be in October! This means we will have a new Test Drive Meme on September 15 and reserves will open on September 24 at 12:01AM EST.

And that's all for what we have coming up soon! So let's jump right into September's event.

september 10 - 15: oh, the cows in the meadow.
content warning: blood, gore, animal death (this will be explained below!)

In the early hours of the morning on September 10, anyone outside might find themselves cast into a deep shadow despite the bright, clear skies above. That sudden darkness seems to shroud the area around you - and it continues moving slowly across the ground. Wait, no. Not across the ground. It's the sky.

You may look up as this vast shadow passes, and catch the silhouette of a creature flying high above Asgard. To call it immense would be lacking in every possible way. The shadow it casts upon the city comes from the fact that its wingspan shrouds the sun from view, even at this distance. They don't even need to flap for momentum as the creature coasts steadily over the kingdom at a leisurely pace. Those with a keen eye for such things might struggle to peg an exact measurement, but could estimate that for it to cast a shadow this large at this distance, each wing must be somewhere around 500 feet.

There is a big fucking dragon just slowly gliding over the city, from one side to the next. Where did it come from? How did they not notice such a massive creature approaching? What is it doing here, and where is it going?

Residents of the city are left with only questions as the creature seems to fly on past without a care. Strange, and even scary for some still fearful from the last time a dragon was anywhere near Asgard. But after several hours of watching the skies fraughtfully afterwards, there is no sign of it returning, and a shared, visceral sigh can be felt all throughout the city. A few hours into the afternoon, it becomes apparent that perhaps instead of the skies, they should have been watching the ground.

Seemingly walking out of nowhere, strange birds start pecking their way across the ground in open spaces. There's only a handful of them at first, which draws a curious crowd, until suddenly people realize there's several more kinds coming out of the woodworks. They cluck around people's feet curiously, or bite at things low enough to the ground that could possibly be food. An odd menagerie of chickens begins to parade across town, ranging anywhere from young chicks to grown adults and counting into the low dozens by sundown.

It's not quite the strangest thing happening either, as some of the farmers from Sigyn's district come bustling through town asking about "oddly shaped beasts" nipping around the edges of their fields. By the time any interested parties make it out to the Gróakr Expanse to investigate, the farmers will be aghast at the fact that there seems to be more of them than there were when they left, some just lounging in the grass peacefully while others lazily chew on it. Enough of them spread out across the land that the natives start discussing penning them off at the very least so they don't eat the crops.

Thus we have the very bizarre beginnings of farm animals in Asgard. There aren't a great many of them, and they appear as seemingly random breeds and ages of growth, but several of you might have ideas for what to do with these new creatures anyway. You might want to come to an agreement about how to handle the limited population of newly arrived animals - but don't despair for long, as their numbers will have nearly doubled by sunrise the next day, and more continue to arrive from nowhere in particular. There's an awed kind of frenzy as the natives bustle about, trying to corral them with excited chatter and burning curiosity. They really have no clue what to do with them - how do we raise more? What do they need to eat? Where do we put them? How many of you have already started cooking them?

This is the buzz all around the city, and the natives burst into a bewildered cheering when a handful of pigs start wandering the streets with them. It's a weirdly wonderful burst of life after the destruction that found them previously, and it brings a certain amount of celebration to a city beginning to find its stride.

But then the next day - nothing happens. Perhaps unintentionally imagining a similar experience to the magical appearance of stuff that had lasted several days previously, the natives are visibly disappointed as they realize nothing new has appeared by nightfall.

The day after that - still nothing. And the day after that too.

cw: blood, gore, animal death

But then on the night of the 14th, when most of the city is preparing for bed, some of you might be startled to see strange lights flickering in the streets through your bedroom windows. Or maybe you hear voices speaking low in a muffled unison, a level of noise that isn't typical for evenings in Asgard. Those curious enough to step outside and investigate will be met with a rather gruesome sight: some of the natives of various districts, standing in the streets with blood dripping from their hands or bared chests or even smeared across their faces.

As may become immediately apparent, the blood is not theirs. It's not human at all.

Visible under the torchlight being held aloft by some of the natives are the corpses of some meticulously slaughtered cows, one for each district in the city. The natives are carving them into neat sections with no small amount of reverence as they kill them swiftly and dismantle them carefully. Others catch the dripping blood in their hands or in bowls and then paint it across themselves and each other and the doors of nearby buildings. The bloodied slabs of meat are passed from one native to another in a strangely uncoordinated yet ceremonial way, as they carry their offerings artfully towards the castle and leave muddy red trails behind them.

It is macabre and filthy, but there seems to be a certain element of joviality to it too. After days of the city growing more glum with the short-lived fervor of these very same animals arriving, Asgard seems to be alight with some kind of new energy. A… vaguely unpleasant one for some, but an excited energy all the same.

Anyone that asks will learn that they are seeking the blessing of the gods, in the hopes that more livestock will come to them. This is, in their own weird way, a ritual of worshipping life. At least, they hope this will please the gods; no one ever said it would, and no one has exactly asked. They are so terribly earnest about it, though. Maybe someone should have a conversation with them about this. :(

umm… what?
Well, when the inexplicable blessing of new life and possibility is seemingly cut short, the obvious solution is to sacrifice life to receive more of it, right? At least, that's what these baby Asgardians are thinking. Blood is the lifeforce of living creatures, it is the closest one can get to holding the pure life magic that creates the known world. Basking in it brings them closer to the Mother, and to their patron deities by association. This is almost like a party to them - but it might also be pretty upsetting by other standards. For one, it is generally polite to ask before painting someone's door with cow's blood.

This event is a clashing of cultures, or rather of a culture that hasn't been defined yet stumbling through the dark and tripping over a bunch of other cultures by accident. What will your character's reaction be to this? What will they do about it, if anything? The natives have been nothing but kind and helpful in every possible interaction with the Wanderers thus far, and they seem just as pleasantly warm and happy to invite them into this cheerfully violent scene. How does this affect your view of them? Will you join them? Should… should someone tell them to stop?

This event doesn't really have an end to it! They will be making these sacrifices overnight, and there will be a hugenormous mess to clean in the morning on the 15th, but whether or not the carnage is deemed socially acceptable or not is up in the air. This is something we will be letting the PCs try to navigate through. The gods are nonplussed more than anything, although some certainly have stronger opinions on the matter than others. They didn't really come here to tell the humans how to live or how to worship, though, so they're somewhat relying on you to make a judgment call here.

Do we want to teach this young human race that killing animals is bad? Or do we at the very least agree on a scheduled date for ritual blood sacrifices so we don't wake up the neighbors with our chanting? If they want more animals, animal husbandry might be a useful skill to teach them; so would getting blood out of clothes. We've got options here - or maybe we just ask them to stop and never speak of this again. It's up to you!

For this event, we are asking for one volunteer to post on the network about this on September 14. This is just to give us one place to ICly discuss what your characters want to do here! Anyone is free to post about it if they want to, but we'll be using one main post to discuss/debate/etc. If you are interested in making this post, please sign up in the comments section below by September 9 at 11:59PM EST, at which point we'll select someone by RNG. Your only obligation would be making the post on the 14th; you don't have to respond to every comment on it, and we will be reading through all the comments on that post to decide how this event wraps up.

Your character might have to have some conversations with the natives or at least the gods. Or maybe they just want to stay indoors until the city is a little more… presentable again. Either way, the next day is a slightly awkward community effort to clean the streets and have Serious Conversations about our behavior. If nothing else, at least there's a well stocked feast of newly cooked meats available throughout the day! :^)

  • The natives begin getting very excited about all of this, and celebrate when some pigs start showing up as well.
  • On the 12th, nothing happens, and the natives seem incredibly disappointed by this.
  • On the 13th, nothing happens.
  • On the morning of the 14th, still nothing happens.
  • In the late evening of the 14th, the natives take to the streets with song and sacrifice, bathing each other in animal blood in the hopes that the gods and the Mother will bless them with more livestock.
  • This confuses the gods.
  • The Wanderers are asked to decide how the kingdom should proceed from here. There will be one main network post for discussing this. Volunteers for making this post can sign up here until September 9 at 11:59PM EST, at which time we'll select one via RNG.
  • On the 15th, the city will be busy cleaning up the streets, but there's also a city-wide cookout for the newly available meats.

And that's what we've got for September! (I really hope y'all get my dumb macabre humor here.) We'll be having our next battle scenario in October along with welcoming in our new characters, so stay tuned for more soon. As always, please let us know if you've got any questions/comments/concerns/dirty jokes in the comments section below or on the mod contact page. Thank you all so much for being here. ♥
