MOD POST: AUGUST EVENT DESCRIPTION

august event description.

Hey, y'all! Faith here with our event description for August! Once again, we are combining our intro log with our event for the month as per our player poll, so there will only be one main to-do for August. However, we've also got a pop-up flavor event coming from Skadi later in the month - and this is still very much a tentative event schedule! Please always feel free to give us feedback on events and pacing over on the mod contact page so we can keep in touch with how you guys are feeling about things. We want to make sure you have enough to do without getting overwhelmed or bored, a terribly delicate balance to strike.

If you're ever looking for more to get involved with, you can drop us a line on the plot request/suggestions page to ask what your character can get up to, or check in with some of the others on their player plots! We've got a ton of fun ones running, and you can find information about the ones that have been shared on this handy new player plot tag.

A couple of reminders before we continue:
  • Applications are open until August 7 at 11:59PM PST! We can accept up to 35 applications from new players and 20 applications from current players.
  • NPC applications are open for Njord and Heimdall. We also unfortunately lost Tyr's player, so if anyone is interested in him as a character, please contact us so we can discuss it!
  • Mod helper applications are open until August 31. We're looking for one or two power mods to help with god power applications and a prompt mod to write event logs for us. Please let us know if you have questions about either of these roles!
  • July's AC results are here and August AC is now open here. Please make sure to submit your AC by August 31 at 11:59PM EST!

With that all said and done, let's move on to August's event!

august 8: more than meets the eye.
On the bright and sunny morning of August 8, everyone will receive a gentle ping on their bracelets. A short message will read: Join us at the castle today to welcome some new Wanderers into our midst. Breakfast will be served and a lively game will be available to all of our guests, both new and old. The message can be easily dismissed afterwards, but some of the natives will be making their way in that direction if anyone wants to join them.

When you arrive at the castle grounds, they will have the same white picnic tables set up from the last introduction to new Wanderers, only this time, there seems to be a bit more festivity to the arrangement. There are banners and streamers in each of the gods' houses artfully wrapped around their own separate tables, creating a colorful display that gently billows in the passing breeze. At each table, there are a few of that district's natives and perhaps even the god themselves, all ready and waiting to explain the details of the game to those that approach.

The main goal for today's competition is to collect the most coins for your god house. Each of the nine gods has scattered coins bearing their color and crest throughout the city, and the house that returns the most of their patron's coins will be considered the winners of the game. This means that teamwork will be paramount if you want to be able to cover more of the city! You don't necessarily have to team up with characters from your own house if you'd like to collaborate with others, but you will only score points by finding your god's coins.

The coins themselves are hidden all throughout the city - and not just in the sense of being placed discreetly, but they are actually hidden, disguised as other inconspicuous items. Your characters must try to discern what these items are in order to find the coins! These can books, spoons, shoes, literally anything you can imagine as long as it is not specifically someone's personal belonging. You'll have to traverse the city and pick through what you can in the hopes of finding one of these hidden items.

The trick is making sure you find your god's coins. When you pick up one of the concealed items that belongs to your god house, it will change into a coin that lightly glows the same color as your bracelet. When you pick up one of the concealed items that belongs to another god house, however, the item disappears and something strange happens instead! Your character will immediately be hit with one of the following minor curse effects depending on whose coin they accidentally picked up:

Odin
  • truth: You must give someone a piece of advice, such as something you've been wanting to tell them or a general life tip.
  • dare: You must look into something you've been curious about, such as going somewhere you haven't been or asking someone about something.

Njord
  • truth: You must tell someone a secret, such as simply stating something you haven't told them before or it's something you've been hiding.
  • dare: You must write a tale, such as a short form novel of your life's adventures or a haiku about yesterday's dinner.

Skadi
  • truth: You must tell someone about something that inspires you, such as a devoted passion or someone you look up to.
  • dare: You must express a deep emotion without words, such as singing a song or painting your feelings.

Sigyn
  • truth: You must tell someone a compliment, such as something you've been admiring about them or a casual remark on their general demeanor.
  • dare: You must commit a random act of kindness, such as holding the door for someone or cleaning up a mess you found.

Tyr
  • truth: You must address a conflict you have with someone, such as seeking to make amends or bringing a grievance to light.
  • dare: You must embrace someone you care about, such as hugging a friend or kissing a crush.

Heimdall
  • truth: You must confess your level of devotion to someone, such as loyalty until death or complete indifference.
  • dare: You must check in on someone you know, such as a dear friend or someone you're not sure you can trust.

Mimir
  • truth: You must tell someone about your outlook on something important, such as the purpose of life or what true love looks like.
  • dare: You must trick someone, such as pulling off an elaborate prank or convincing them of a lie.

Honir
  • truth: You must tell someone about something that excites you, such as your favorite hobby or something that brings you joy.
  • dare: You must try something new, such as eating a weird Asgardian fruit or saying something kind for once.

Frigg
  • truth: You must tell someone about your home, such as who you consider family or a place you grew up.
  • dare: You must give someone a gift, such as a thoughtful present for a loved one or a random belonging passed off to a stranger.

That's right, friends! We have a scavenger hunt/truth or dare curse afoot. Anyone that wants to play the game will be told that they have until sundown to collect as many coins as they can find. Once the sun sets, all of the coins in the city will disappear and a winner will be announced. This will be OOCly announced on August 17; this is to give everyone (including our new characters!) time to sign up to play!

The main reason for this being that I would really like to test an experimental mechanic that I've been kicking around for awhile! Because this is an exploration style event, instead of vaguely assuming that everyone searches every inch of the city and declaring a winner by randomization or something else, I'd like to try a way for you to actually show us where your character wants to look. In the interest of making this manageable for us as mods and playable for you, we're going to attempt this using an editable map of the city.

This part is completely optional for participating in the event. (Your character doesn't even have to know about the game to participate!) The map is only if you'd like to actually have your character play the game and try to score points. Because the city is roughly the shape of a circle divided into nine slices, I created a very basic map we can use. To designate your character's path through the city for this event, you'll have to draw a line from the center point to one of the edges in any direction like this. Once you've made/submitted your map to us, we'll compare it to our super secret version to tell you what coins you found along the way!

Every character gets one line, so if you team up with people, you can place all of your lines on the same map to cover more ground. This is also a really good option for people that can't/don't know how to edit the maps themselves; team up with people that can draw one for you! You do not actually have to thread every interaction with your group either. Essentially what will happen is we'll pool the results for your group, and you'll be free to play with all of the available prompts while assuming that your group searched the city together. The most labor intensive part of this should really just be making the map - the rest should be nonsense and shenanigans. And again, this is entirely optional! But we will only tally up points scored on the maps to determine who the winner is.

Which brings us to the last but certainly not least part of this event: the reward! The winning god house will be allowed to vote on an upgrade to their god housing. This can be anything. Do you want a pool on the roof? Massage chairs? Fuzzy robes and slippers for every Wanderer? Whatever you want, but you'll have to come to an agreement on it. We'll toss up a voting/discussion post for the winning god house on August 17 when a winner is announced and assume the upgrade is added immediately.

Alright, let's do an event breakdown to walk through all of this!

how does the game itself work?
the basics
  • There are coins concealed to look like random mundane items scattered throughout the city.
  • When someone picks one of these items up, something happens!
    • If it belongs to your god, it will turn into a coin bearing their color and crest.
    • If it belongs to another god, it will disappear and you will immediately be hit with one of the above curse effects.
  • At sundown, all of the coins disappear and the god house that found the most coins will win. Points will be tallied based on the maps submitted by August 17.
  • The winning god house will get to vote on an upgrade to their accommodations.

the curse effects
  • Your character cannot be affected by the curses from their god, but they can be affected by all the others!
  • You can pick and choose which ones happen to your character, you can submit a map to get specific choices, or you can say your character is lucky enough to make it through the day without picking up anything weird.
  • The curse takes effect immediately, so your character feels compelled to do it right away, the same way actual truth or dare is played.
  • For the truths, it doesn't matter who you tell as long as you tell someone. You could tell the next person you bump into, make a post to the network, or text a bunch of people. You could hunt through the entire city until you find the person you feel compelled to talk to. You could scream it very loudly from the middle of the street. Whatever you want!
  • For the dares, the same applies. You can log it out, post it on the network, handwave it happening in the background. As long as your character does the compelled action.
  • The examples given are just examples, as always, so please feel free to get creative with what kind of truth or dare your character winds up with. Have fun with it, and always feel free to ask us if you aren't sure!

what does that mean for us?
playing alone
  • Your character will only be told the rules of the game if they go to the castle!
  • They will be told that there are coins concealed as everyday items hidden throughout the city. The goal is to find your god's coins; if you find someone else's, "something interesting may happen." (The NPCs will not elaborate on this if asked!)
  • optional: You can take the blank map and draw one line from the center to the edge for your character. (sample)
    • Submit your map on this thread by August 17 to find out what coins your character picks up!
    • We'll tell you if you found any of your house's coins and how many points you scored, as well as any curse effects you might have stumbled onto.

playing with others
  • Basically the exact same thing as above!
  • If you group up with people from your own god house, you have slightly better chances of finding more of your god's coins.
  • If you group up with people from other god houses, you can circumvent some of the other house's curse effects by saying they found those coins.
  • optional: You can take the blank map and draw one line from the center to the edge for every character in your group. (sample)
    • Submit your map on this thread by August 17 to find out what coins your group picks up!
    • We'll tell you how many coins you found from every applicable god house. Characters belonging to those houses will earn points for each coin, but any character in the group can play with the applicable curse effects.

not playing at all
  • Either your characters goes to the castle and decides not to play, or doesn't find out about the game at all.
  • They can still unwittingly pick up items to find a coin/be hit with a curse!

august event summary.
august 8: more than meets the eye
  • In the morning, everyone will be sent a message telling them there are new Wanderers to greet at the castle. There will be lunch and a game.
  • Those that go to the castle will be told how to play the game. Those that don't go can still stumble into it by accident.
  • Each of the gods has hidden coins throughout the city, disguised as every day mundane items. These can be anything you want: books, silverware, clothing, etc as long as it is not someone's personal belonging.
  • Picking up one of your god's coins is harmless; picking up someone else's coins results in one of the above curse effects.
  • At sundown, all of the coins disappear and a winner will be announced. Points will be tallied based on the maps submitted by August 17.
  • The god house that collected the most coins will be declared the winners and allowed to vote on an upgrade to their god housing.
  • optional: If you want to actually play the game and score points, you can edit this map by drawing a line from the center to the edge to show us your character's path. You can cover more of the map by grouping up with others. Submit your maps on this thread by August 17 to learn what coins you found and score points.

And that's it for August! Stay posted for more on Skadi's pop up event later in the month. As always, please let us know if you have any questions/comments/concerns/dirty jokes in the comments below or on the mod contact page! We'll see you on the intro log, and come check out the CR meme to meet your fellow players!
